The beauty of a walking holiday in the Hebrides is the variety of walks available right there on your doorstep, in one of the last true wilderness areas left in the UK today.

In these islands you can walk for days and not meet a soul, while experiencing some of the most dramatic and spectacular scenery around. Choose from gentle walks on the hundreds of miles of white sandy beaches, to treks through the high rugged hills of Harris for stunning panoramas that take in both lochs and offshore islands. Fantastic coastal and moorland walks can bring you to deserted villages miles from any road and to ancient and mysterious archeological sites. Even if you don't meet many people along the way, the wildlife is immensely varied and walking is the best way to view species such as otter, corncrake, red deer and golden eagle.

There really is something for everyone - marked walks with corresponding leaflet guides are available in Tourist Information Centres, a number of walking books have been written about the islands and there are experienced guides who can organise and direct a walk to suit your own ability. They have a wealth of indigenous knowledge, from local legends and where to spot otters to unmarked historical sites. A number of local accommodation providers participate in the Walkers Welcome scheme. There are also hostels and cottages in remote locations which are of the traditional blackhouse style but with fully modernised facilities.

This makes for the perfect base on a walking holiday, where you can return to an open fire and a nice meal and watch the sun set in the wide and open landscape. With nature right on your doorstep and a huge variety of types and levels of walks, these fantasy islands are waiting to be explored.
